ALERT

Service disruptions are anticipated for patients delivering or requiring care at BCWH as the hospital transitions from paper to computerized records

Feb. 26 - March 31, 2022

BC Women’s supports over 7,000 deliveries for women each year and is one of the busiest maternity care centres in Canada. BC Women’s also provides the highest level of neonatal care in the province.

This is an excellent video that takes you through all the steps you will go through when you have your baby at BC Women’s.

BC Women’s Hospital

BC Women’s Hospital is part of the Children’s and Women’s Health Centre of BC. The complex is located on Oak Street, between 28th Ave and 32nd Ave. Please check out this site map. Parking is available on campus, but availability is limited.

Getting to where you need to go at BC Women’s can be a bit confusing. Hopefully, the following information will be useful to you.

OB

If you are a patient of Dr. Bélanger, Branco, van Schalkwyk, or Yue, you will be registered for delivery at BCWH, and your care in hospital will with your primary provider, or the on-call OB from the OB Group.

To register for delivery at BCWH, you must live in Vancouver proper and be able to provide proof of residence.
Exceptions to this rule include patients who have previously delivered at BC Women’s, patients who are high-risk and require tertiary-level maternity care, and those who are existing gynaecologic patients of ours.

Urgent Care Centre (UCC) - Entrance # 97
When it is time to give give birth, whether this be by natural labour, induced labour, or planned C-section, you will access the hospital through the Urgent Care Centre (#97). This is also the place to go for any obstetrical emergencies that may arise during pregnancy.

Single Room Maternity (SRMC)
If your pregnancy is low-risk, you will likely deliver in the recently-renovated single-room maternity care (SRMC) unit. There are 27 patients rooms where women labour, deliver, and stay postpartum with their newborns until discharge. Amenities include a new family lounge, private bathrooms, beds for support persons to sleep on, and decor to create a modern, comfortable, "home-like" feel in the rooms.

Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC)
If your pregnancy is higher-risk, or if you are delivering by C-section, the birth will take place in the Teck Acute Care Centre (TACC) building, which is the new home for BC Children’s Hospital. The labour and delivery suite (LDR) is directly adjacent to the Operating Room (OR) and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). You will be admitted through the UCC in the old building, and access the new unit through a tunnel on the 2nd floor.

Post-Partum Units
After delivering on the TACC unit, you will be transferred to a room on one of the postpartum units (Arbutus or Dogwood), located in the old building.

Main Entrance - Entrance #93
If you are coming to the hospital for an elective procedure, such as an ultrasound, amniocentesis or fetal assessment (also known as a non-stress test or NST), or if you have an appointment at one of the ambulatory clinics (eg. Diabetes, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Internal Medicine), you will come in through the Main Entrance (#93).

GYN

In addition to being our main site for maternity care, BC Women’s is also home to a gynaecological Surgical Daycare Unit where Drs. Bélanger, Branco, Lalani, van Schalkwyk, and Yue carry out some of their elective out-patient surgeries. Procedures not requiring general anesthesia can be done under procedural sedation.

If you are booked for a gynaecologic procedure at BC Women’s you should enter through the Main Entrance (#93).

When your surgery is booked, you will receive a booklet with detailed instructions regarding your procedure.
